MARCH/APRIL 2008

State of the Union Update

I thought I would give sort of a State of the Union update on how the association is doing for this issue’s article.

We got off to good start in October with testifying at the Senate hearing on coastal issues at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood campus. Your association gave excellent testimony as to the coastal insurance crisis in Suffolk County. Tom Crowley, Chair of our Coastal Committee, participated in a round table discussion involving various industry groups hosted by the Insurance Advocate in New York City. They discussed the capacity crunch for homeowners insurance effecting Long Island. At L-Day we made good progress which hopefully will turn out to be a fruitful meeting in March about coastal issues here in Suffolk.

Our Programs Committee has been very active with some different ideas and luncheon formats for our general membership meetings, with some terrific turn outs by the membership at each meeting. We have an upcoming March 06th joint meeting with Tri County with special guest speaker Bob Hartwig PhD, CPCU president of the Insurance Information Institute. We have been trying to have him speak at one of our meetings for about a year. It should be a great topical meeting and we are anticipating another fantastic turnout by our members. Our April 16th meeting will be another great meeting with Virginia Bates, who has traveled around the country for the past 20 years consulting agencies. Their will be CE credit seminars before and after the general membership luncheon meeting. Of course don’t forget to go tour website www.Suffolkagents.com sign up for our Golf and Installation meeting in May and June.

Our other committees have also been busy and are starting to get the ball rolling. Our Nominating Committee is looking for a few good men and women that want to give back to the industry as board members of the Suffolk Association. Each year as board members go through their terms we have positions that open up. So, if you or you know of someone that would like to get involved, let me know and I will pass the name onto our Nominating Committee. Don’t forget, you do not have to be a principal of an agency to join our board.

On a sadder note, Don Archdeacon passed away February 15th at his home. Don, besides being a past president of this association and involved in many different organizations, such as CPCU and teaching CPCU, was instrumental in helping me outline my Boces insurance class curriculum. On behalf of myself and the Suffolk Agents Association, I wish Don’s wife Mary and his children our deepest sympathy.
