| To All Suffolk County High School
Graduating Students of 2008:
The Independent Insurance Agents Association of Suffolk County
is pleased to announce the Tenth Annual Scholarship opportunity.
This year we will award two $1,500 scholarships to high school
seniors enrolling at a college or university in the fall of
2008.
Each candidate should have a satisfactory academic record
within the school setting. Academic performance is not the
only factor in the selection process. Winning candidates will
be those submitting the most comprehensive essays. The essay
topic this year was triggered by a recent auto accident in
Smithtown where three young people were killed. There was
a lot of discussion in Newsday about the responsible driver’s
license. Even more recently, there was another fatal auto
accident, in this one, a young woman from Albertson was driving
with a permit, ran a red light and killed a passenger in another
vehicle.
Following a series of tragic auto
accidents in our area involving teen driver, there have been
many recent newspaper articles concerning ”Junior”
licenses. Some of these articles pointed to the fact that
many people, parents and young drivers alike, do not know
the rules pertaining to a junior license and as a result these
rules are violated. We ask that you examine the law on this
subject and answer the following questions. (Note the different
rules for the five boroughs and Long Island)
If you had the power to re-word any portion of the motor vehicle
rules pertaining to learners’ permits, limited-use junior
licenses, full-use junior licenses and senior licenses, would
you choose to do so? If not, why do you think the rules are
effective as it?
If you answered “yes”, please reshape any portion
of this motor vehicle law in your own words. Be sure to consider
age, driving hours, driving distance and purpose of use. Add
to the rules whatever else you feel would effectively encourage
safe driving, while considering fairness to new drivers.
Following is an application form. Please feel free to call
with any questions. We look forward to being of service to
you.
Sincerely,
Paulette Katz
